Distraction

In my workshops, we call “Aunt Mary” a lot. Who is Aunt Mary, you ask? She’s the fictitious auntie that we suddenly remember we have to call this very instant when a child has become impossibly fixated on a demand and we need a gentle way to distract him. This obviously works better with younger children, but it can work very well with others.

Child:(after asking seven times why you can’t go to the pet store and play with the puppies) “Why, Mommy? Why can’t we? It’ll only take a minute! Why can’t we? Why? We have to go right now!”

Mom: “Oh my gosh! I forgot to call Aunt Mary!” (And you promptly—but politely—excuse yourself to go into the other room to make that important call.)

It also works if you suddenly have to go to the bathroom, find someone’s phone number, or see if the toilet is running. Often, the kindest way to deal with a child who’s stuck is simply to shift gears abruptly. Aunt Mary sometimes gets a lot of pretend phone calls!
